We have nearly 800 products for allergy sufferers in our “Fri från” (Free from) line, and we also have our healthy “ICA Gott liv” line of products which contain less sugar, salt, fat and additives, but more fibre. Following a thorough review, many of our products are also entirely additive-free.
We are also working to achieve clearer labelling, through everything from the Keyhole label and nutritional information to allergy cards and information on harmful substances. With regard to the latter, we try to limit the use of chemicals that can be harmful to health and/or the environment in the products we sell. We have strict requirements on which chemicals may not be used and carefully follow scientific reports and studies, while at the same time listening to our customers’ concerns about potentially harmful substances. For example, ICA Sweden phased out bisphenol A (BPA) a number of years ago from cash register receipts, baby bottles and other children’s products, as well as from plastic food containers and certain packaging, and cartons are now being used instead of tins. Additives such as azo dyes are banned throughout ICA’s range of food products, while some hardened fats containing trans fats were phased out of ICA Sweden’s range back in the early 2000s. The flavour enhancer MSG is used only in a few Asian-style products.
